A song, a prayer, a plea to G-d. Does suffering have a purpose? In the evening prayer we recite before bedtime, in our Jewish tradition, we ask God to rectify our soul - but "not through suffering or severe illness."
Through suffering then, (amongst other mechanisms), our spiritual tradition teaches us, comes rectification. But we also know that we are permitted to question, confront and challenge the Creator of the Universe at times, in the style of Moses and King David before us. Haven't we suffered enough? Can't You end it? As imperfect as we are, we can remind Him, ultimately we choose You, we choose Life, we're "on Your Side."
Bring Us Home was written in the weeks leading up to the release of the (deceased) Bibas family hostages kidnapped in Israel over a year earlier, when suffering seemed to reach a zenith and any lingering illusions were shattered.
It is a prayer to G-d, to finally end our individual and collective suffering; and further, to bring us to that promised time of sustained peace, when spiritual, emotional, intellectual and physical refinement will be available to all - the Final Redemption.
Dedicated to all the victims of October 7th 2023 and its aftermath.
